Community gatherings are held in early afternoon and are somber an inspirational in nature. Work and school are suspended on this holy day. Two attempts were required to execute the Báb. Before the first attempt he said he was not finished giving his final instructions to his companions, but was placed before the firing squad. The regiment of 750 soldiers fired before 20,000 witnesses, but only succeeded in severing the rope that bound the Báb in place. The Báb vanished in the smoke and was found completing His instructions to His companions. The commander of the first firing squad removed his troops, refusing to participate further. A second regiment of 750 rifles fired at the Báb later that day, this time killing him and a young follower, Mírzá Muhammad-‘Alí-i-Zunúzí, surnamed Anís, who had begged to be executed along with the Báb. A series of natural disasters struck Tabriz as soon as the shots were fired: a violent gale force wind and earthquake brought destruction to the city, and gave rise to famine and a cholera epidemic. One third of the firing squad later died in an earthquake, the remainder were executed for mutiny. The bodies of the Báb and Anis were retrieved as directed by Bahá’u’lláh and ultimately interred at the Shrine of the Báb on the slope of Mount Carmel, in Haifa, Israel.
